New Year, New Body Image

It’s mid January, and it’s about that time that we begin to evaluate our New Year’s Resolutions. Right about now we are finding that they were either totally unrealistic... or empowering!

Either way, keeping up with resolutions the entire year is difficult - especially when it comes to fitness and weight loss (historically, the #1 New Years Resolution).

Maybe you’re already feeling like that diet or the goal of going to gym everyday is unrealistic, and maybe unfulfilling. Maybe you’re already discouraged, and over it.

Maybe in 2019, we should be seeking over-all better health, instead of just better bodies.

Having a truly healthy body requires having a healthy self-image. Between social media, influencers, ad campaigns, and a multitude of other sources... we constantly feel slapped in the face with this lie: I don’t measure up. Accepting our bodies as the beautiful, capable vessels they are can feel next to impossible.

So what are some positive steps we can take towards a healthy self-image?

Start from the Inside Out

There’s nothing wrong with wanting to gain muscle definition, or lose weight. But if you don’t accept and love yourself as you are now, you won’t when you achieve those goals you worked so hard for either! Be kind to your mind. Be gracious towards your flaws. Accept them as part of what makes you unique.

Make lists of what you like about yourself and things that make you feel good.

Also, ask yourself why. Why do I want to lose that weight? Why do I want to change my eating habits? Maybe it’s not “I want to be a size 6” but rather “I want to have more energy and feel confident.” You are much more likely to achieve goals rooted in conviction rather than discontentment!

Buy Clothes That Fit Us Well

... and disregard the number! One tip a woman one offered me was physically cutting the tags out of your jeans. You know the number varies store by store anyways, and having clothes that fit and compliment your shape will not only make you feel better, it will make you look better - even if you technically could make a different size work.

It was this idea that started the Birch and Grace line - comfortable, breathable, and suitable for any body, shape, and size.

This is relevant even if you are still on the road towards meeting your body goals, feeling good and presenting yourself well will keep you motivated to keep going!

Change Your Habits

Little things like throwing out your scale, not analyzing other womens’ bodies, and not keeping junk food in the house can make a huge difference in feeling and being healthy! What do you find yourself constantly doing that is making you feel worse? It is said that it takes only 21 days to form a habit, so if you can stick with it for even 2-3 weeks, you are more likely to stick with it for good.

Finally, find an accountability partner! Someone you can open up to about your goals that will lift you up, and help you stay on track to meet your goals. It’s easier to make an excuse to yourself then someone you respect. May 2019 be your year!
